A new home designed for a family with a taste for reclaimed wood, antique furnishings and distressed surfaces, this 11,000 square foot residence is at once dramatically rustic and unmistakably refined.
"Gutsy and full of character" with its heavy wood beams and metal strapping, this family room redo steers clear of "man cave" clichés to achieve relevance as an informal yet inviting den and bar.
The First Place winner in a competition showcasing multiple-room redesigns, this project won over judges with its "fabulous detai's," visible in the dramatic ceiling, reclaimed wood floors and colorful textiles and finishes.
What’s the secret to successful design? Sandy LaMendola, founder of Twist Interior Design, shares the philosophy that has landed her in the pages of Midwest Home – and made Twist one of the most sought-after design studios in the residential market.
Charged with bringing color and playfulness to a Ralph Rapson-designed white-on-white contemporary, Twist softened the 12,000 square foot house with texture, populated it with furnishings that were simultaneously contemporary and timeless, and energized the less formal spaces with bold colors and unconventional surfaces. The result: a sophisticated, yet playful environment that both dazzles and soothes.
What are the signs of a fruitful partnership between client and designer? Quality of communication and collaboration portend great things, says Sandy LaMendola, ASID, owner of Twist, but the true predictor of success is that the client has fun – “because when the process is a pleasure, the results are almost guaranteed to be great.”

The lakeside site was perfect, but the 1950s split-level rambler needed work. Twist helped unify design, decoration and the renovated home’s prairie/arts-and-crafts style architecture to optimize interplay between the inside and outside, and showcase the homeowners’ extensive art collection.
Collaborating with Criteria Architects, Twist converted a non-descript 1950s split-level rambler overlooking Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis into a prairie-style house with a sun-filled English-style conservatory, hand-forged sconces, period lighting, back-lit stained glass and a fireplace framed by a custom-made ceramic leaf design.
The project was a kitchen. The challenge: how to bring the outside in. Twist harmonized approachable, organic elements, including woods and natural stones, with bold patterns and furnishings of simple, clean design. The result united not only the exterior and exterior environments, but traditional and contemporary styles.
Converting an ‘80s-style kitchen into a culinary showpiece, Twist created an environment that harmonized custom-detailed stone and tiling, oil-rubbed bronze light figures, highly refined workspace functions and a fifty-four-inch faux copper finish hood over the Wolf range.
Partnering with Enhanced Home Systems of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Twist integrated a state-of-the-art home audio-video system into a curvaceous stainless steel and aluminum, dual-workspace kitchen fabricated by Pininfarina.
Working with L. Cramer Designers and Builders, Twist created “an artful nest rich with meaning and inspiration.”
A new, 5,300-square foot home on Lake Minnetonka provided a canvas for Twist to create a sumptuous, yet sublimely relaxed environment where a retired couple could both luxuriate and play – by themselves and in the company of their children and grandchildren.
In a special focus on executive homes, Twist Design provided guidance on homebuilding and design trends in areas ranging from color choices, countertops and wall treatments, to cable television design shows.
Designing the dining room of the American Society of Interior Designers’ 2005 Minnesota “Showcase Home,” Twist blended found objects, antiques and reproduction furniture with more contemporary elements to create a fresh and unexpected environment that was both eclectic and rich.
As past president of the American Society of Interior Designers’ Minnesota chapter, Twist owner and principal designer Sandy LaMendola, ASID, supervised hundreds of hours of preparation, design, coordinating, detailing and installation for a showcase residence overlooking scenic Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.
Making window treatments and furnishings that command as much attention as anything on the other side of the glass, Twist combined Kravet’s Alexa Hampton Collection silk bullion tassels, Amadeo Green & Plum woven tapestry, and bronze finials from the private collection of principal designer Sandy LaMendola.
